Fan's silken string

"Fan's silken string" by Annette Lyster is a novel written in the late 19th century. The opening of the novel shows Ben bluffing his way into haymaking work on a Midland farm, charming everyone while secretly sleeping in the loft, pilfering fruit, and teaching a mate to gamble. A chance talk about his sister awakens his conscience, and he slips away at night—wrongly taking wages and a child’s frock—to return to his Kent village. There he finds his father arrested for poaching, his mother and baby dead of fever, and Fan dangerously weak; with the help of kind Mrs. Simmonds, he carries Fan off at night to avoid the workhouse and police. In London they are turned out when Fan’s fever is discovered, then ride partway into the country on a carrier’s waggon until the driver exposes Ben’s lies; hungry and wandering, Ben resists stealing food after Fan’s rebuke and faith-filled trust. The sequence closes with Fan asleep in a small “toy” cottage in a wood—part of the Harewood estate—just as the narrative turns to introduce the warm, well-to-do Harewoods and their cherished daughter, Pearl.
