Description

Teresa, Contessa di Guiccioli, provides an intimate biographical account of Lord Byron, focusing on his personal character and moral attributes. Written in the late 19th century, the work aims to clarify misconceptions about the poet by contrasting his public reputation with private aspects of his life as observed by those close to him. The narrative discusses Byron's childhood, youth, and friendships, with particular attention to his moral and intellectual qualities, religious opinions, and acts of benevolence. Guiccioli seeks to differentiate the man from his poetic persona, highlighting his capacity for kindness and familial affection, and offering insights into his private motives and character traits.

The book also includes personal reflections and portraits of Byron from different perspectives, including French representations and descriptions of his relationships. As a biographical work, it contributes to the understanding of Byron’s multifaceted personality within the context of Victorian-era biography, providing commentary based on Guiccioli's personal experiences and observations.

INTRODUCTION. "To know another man well, especially if he be a noted and illustrious character, is a great thing not to be despised."— Sainte-Beuve . Many years ago a celebrated writer, in speaking of Lord Byron, who had then been dead some years, said that so much had already been written upon him that the subject had almost become commonplace, but was far from being exhausted.
