Description
"Select Temperance Tracts" is a collection of writings from the American Tract Society that addresses the moral, social, and health-related issues associated with alcohol consumption. Comprising various essays and addresses, the volume advocates for the temperance movement by highlighting the detrimental effects of ardent spirits on individuals and society. The texts include medical, religious, and social perspectives that collectively argue against alcohol use, aiming to raise awareness and promote sobriety. The collection reflects mid-19th-century concerns about alcohol's role in societal decline and personal harm, serving as a tool for moral and behavioural reform.
The work is structured around specific topics such as the effects of spirits, the social consequences of drunkenness, and the influence of alcohol on agricultural practices. It includes notable contributions from figures like Dr. Rush and religious leaders, emphasizing the importance of temperance to individual well-being and societal stability. The collection provides insight into the temperance discourse prevalent in the United States during the mid-1800s, combining medical, moral, and social arguments to support abstinence.
