Description
This work is a historical novel written in prose, composed of a narrative that alternates between two young male characters from different social classes in 16th-century England. The story revolves around Prince Edward Tudor and Tom Canty, two boys who coincidentally meet and exchange clothing, leading them to experience each other's lives. The novel depicts the contrasting worlds of royalty and poverty through their respective perspectives as they navigate unfamiliar environments. It addresses themes of social inequality, justice, and identity within a setting that reflects the societal structures of the Tudor period.
Published in 1881, the work is set during the reign of King Henry VIII and offers a critique of class distinctions and authority. Mark Twain, primarily known for his American writings, adapted this story from a historical context to explore universal issues of empathy and human rights. The narrative combines elements of adventure and social commentary characteristic of late 19th-century fiction.

From the opening pages
I will set down a tale as it was told to me by one who had it of his father, which latter had it of HIS father, this last having in like manner had it of HIS father—and so on, back and still back, three hundred years and more, the fathers transmitting it to the sons and so preserving it. It may be history, it may be only a legend, a tradition. It may have happened, it may not have happened: but it COULD have happened. It may be that the wise and the learned believed it in the old days; it may be that only the unlearned and the simple loved it and credited it. CONTENTS I. The birth of the Prince and the Pauper. II.
